10 Questions To Ask A Social Media Consultant Before Hiring Them

Social media can really help drive your business forward. However, you need to ensure you hire an expert company and not those sneaky cowboys. So, to ensure you get the social boost you’re looking for, here are some questions you just have to ask.

  • Do you understand my business?
First things first, you need to know that your social media consultant knows your business, its place in the market, and of course your target audience. Without that knowledge, how do you expect your consultant to connect with potential customers?
  • How would you connect with my audience?
Social media consultants are supposed to know how to reach an audience. So, this simple question can easily reveal if they’ve given your market and their intended strategy any thought.
  • Can I see your social media accounts?
If your consultant is claiming that they are a social media expert then it would only be fitting that they have plenty of followers themselves on their social media accounts. Check their LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites they intend to use for you to ensure they put their words into practice.
  • Do you use social media tools?
Without tools, social media can be extremely time consuming. Useful tools such as Hootsuite allow pre-scheduled posting to multiple social media channels, reducing the time and money that needs to be spent on your campaign. If your consultant doesn’t use any tools then sound the alarm and run a mile.
  • Do you specialise on certain platforms?
Asking this question will help you understand what your consultant can do for you. There are many social media channels out there today and some are more suited to certain businesses than others. For example, LinkedIn is better for corporate business whereas Pinterest and Flickr are picture posting platforms better suited to promoting businesses like photography companies.
  • How much time will you spend?
You’re going to want to know what you’re getting for your money. So always ask how much time your consultant will spend on your social media campaign. Building a substantial following takes both time and effort, and you want a consultant who can give you at least a couple of hours a day to ensure your money is well spent.
  • How long will my campaign take?
Be wary of consultants who say they’ll get you thousands of followers in just a few weeks. These people usually buy followers that have no interest in your business whatsoever. You want a consultant who can work with you long term to bring in genuine followers who are likely to become customers.
  • How would you build a following?
Similar to connecting with your audience, your consultant should be ready with a few ideas of how to build a following. Popular methods often include surveys, competitions, and “ask me anything” sessions. Just make sure your consultant provides several approaches.
  • How do you measure success?
This is tricky, as gaining thousands of followers doesn’t necessarily mean gaining new business. A good social media consultant will be able to confidently explain how success is measured, and give you valid reasons way. Remember, the right followers can be priceless leads.
  • Can I have all of this in writing?
Seems obvious but you’ll be surprised at those who’ll tell you one thing, and then have something completely different in your contract. Carefully read any paperwork your consultant gives you and ensure it’s consistent with everything they’ve said they’d do for you.
